Differences Between Truck Dashcam and Passenger Vehicle Dashcam
Nowadays, vehicle accessories dash cam not only come in numerous brands but also increasingly detailed product categories. In addition to those for ordinary sedans, there are specialized ones for trucks, motorcycles, school buses, and other special vehicles.
Most sedan dashams have only one camera, while truck dashcam require four. This is mainly because trucks are larger in size and have more blind spots, necessitating multiple cameras to clearly monitor the vehicle's surroundings. For truck dashcam, besides recording videos, positioning the vehicle and tracking its trajectory are also crucial, so they generally come equipped with a GPS module. This allows remote viewing of the recorded videos, enabling real-time remote monitoring.



Trucks are typically larger and have more specialized uses, often involving long-distance transportation and freight logistics, so their operating environments are more complex. Durability should be the primary consideration first. As trucks may travel on rough roads with significant vibrations and temperature fluctuations, the hardware of the dashboard camera needs to be more robust, such as being shockproof and resistant to high and low temperatures. In terms of storage, trucks may drive for longer periods, requiring larger storage capacity or support for loop recording. Night vision functionality is also a consideration, as long-distance transportation may involve driving at night with poor lighting. Additionally, the dustproof and waterproof rating is important. Since trucks travel outdoors, encountering rainy days or muddy roads, the camera needs a higher protection rating, such as IP67 or above.
Regarding power supply, the truck's power system may differ from that of a car. Does it have a more stable voltage? Or does it require a wide voltage design to avoid equipment malfunctions caused by voltage fluctuations during startup? Data storage security is another aspect. As trucks are involved in logistics transportation, data needs to be encrypted to prevent tampering. They may also need to support GPS positioning to record driving routes and speeds, which is vital for freight management. Emergency video locking functions are also necessary, automatically saving data in the event of an accident.
The main differences between truck dash cam and ordinary vehicle cameras include voltage compatibility, the number of cameras, safety performance, and storage requirements.
Voltage Compatibility: Truck power systems have large voltage fluctuations (such as sudden drops during startup or generator overload), requiring support for 9~36V wide voltage input (cars typically use 12V) to prevent equipment restart or damage due to unstable voltage.
Multi-Camera Monitoring: Trucks have up to 7 blind spots (front, rear, left, right, cargo box, chassis, top), requiring 4 to 8 camera channels for coverage. In contrast, ordinary recorders mostly have single or dual cameras, only covering the front and interior.
o Due to the long body and numerous blind spots of trucks, they need to support at least four-directional cameras (front, rear, left, right), and some models require additional cameras for the interior of the carriage and fuel tank monitoring:
o Front lens: 170°+ wide-angle to cover the front road conditions;
o Rear lens: Records rear vehicles and reversing situations;
o Side lenses: Monitor blind spots (such as the non-motor vehicle lane during right turns) to reduce "inner wheel difference" accidents;
o Carriage lens: Monitors cargo safety to prevent theft or abnormal opening.
Active Safety Functions: Compared to cars, trucks have a greater need for integration with AI algorithm functions. Truck dash cameras integrate ADAS (Lane Departure Warning, Forward Vehicle Start Reminder), driver identity recognition, abnormal door opening detection, and other functions.
Storage Requirements: Trucks have long daily driving distances, requiring support for 256GB+ memory cards or hard drive storage. During loop recording, priority should be given to retaining data from critical periods (such as videos before and after an accident) to avoid overwriting important records when storage is full. Support for H.265 encoding, which has a 50% higher compression rate than H.264 at the same image quality, saving storage space.
Data Security and Remote Management: Truck dash cams upload data to the cloud in real-time via a 4G module, supporting remote playback and abnormal alarms.
Power-off Protection and Emergency Locking: Equipped with a super capacitor to complete the writing of the last segment of video when the truck suddenly loses power. The G-Sensor has higher sensitivity, automatically locking accident videos to prevent overwriting by loop recording.
